The primary difference lies in their design and functionality. A GNSS choke ring antenna has a distinctive metal ring structure that reduces signal multipath (reflections from nearby surfaces), enhancing signal quality, especially in environments prone to interference. In contrast, a GNSS geodetic antenna is a more general-purpose, high-precision antenna designed to receive signals from multiple GNSS constellations (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, etc.) but lacks the specialized choke ring for suppressing multipath interference.
GNSS choke ring antennas are commonly used in high-precision applications such as reference stations for Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS), scientific research, and geodetic networks where signal accuracy is critical. GNSS geodetic antennas, while still precise, are used in broader applications such as land surveying, mapping, and construction, where conditions may not require the advanced multipath rejection provided by a choke ring antenna.
GNSS choke ring antennas are equipped with several metal rings (the choke rings) that trap and suppress multipath signals, improving accuracy by minimizing interference from reflected signals. Geodetic antennas, while optimized for receiving multi-frequency GNSS signals and offering strong signal quality, do not have these additional structures for multipath mitigation, making them more susceptible to signal degradation in reflective environments.
